✅ 1. "Is This Foundation Crack Normal?"

Usually? Yes.

Concrete cracks.

It shrinks.

Homes settle.

Hairline vertical cracks are common.

🚩 Large stair-step cracks in brick or block

🚩 Significant movement or displacement

🚩 Water entering through the crack

✅ 2. "Why Is My Water Heater Making Popping Noises?"

If it sounds like someone is making popcorn inside the tank...

It's probably sediment.

Over time, minerals settle to the bottom of the tank. As the burner heats that layer, trapped water creates popping and rumbling noises.

It's common.

It's also a sign your water heater may need maintenance or could be losing efficiency.

A little noise is okay.

A percussion concert is not.

✅ 3. "Are Uneven Floors Normal?"

Especially in Illinois?

Absolutely.

Older homes have settled for decades.

Wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in humidity.

A slight slope isn't unusual.

If the floor suddenly changes, becomes significantly uneven, or is accompanied by cracked walls or sticking doors, it's worth investigating further.

That's one thing.

✅ 4. "Is Moss on My Roof Bad?"

Moss is common.

Good?

Not really.

Moss traps moisture against shingles, which can shorten the life of the roof.

It's especially common on shaded, north-facing roof slopes.

Your roof should repel water...

Not grow its own landscaping.

✅ 5. "Why Are My Windows Foggy?"

If the fog is outside...

Congratulations.

That's humidity.

If it's inside your house...

You may have high indoor humidity.

If it's between the panes of glass...

The insulated glass seal has likely failed.

Different causes.

Different solutions.

✅ 6. "Why Do My Stairs Creak?"

Wood moves.

Fasteners loosen.

Homes settle.

A squeaky stair isn't automatically a structural problem.

It's usually just announcing your arrival.

Many furnaces make:

✅ 8. "Is That White Powder on My Basement Wall Mold?"

Usually...

No.

It's often efflorescence.

Water moves through masonry, leaving mineral deposits behind as it evaporates.

The white powder itself isn't mold.

But it's a clue that moisture has been moving through the wall.

The real question becomes:

Why is the wall getting wet?

✅ 9. "Why Won't My Door Close?"

Seasonal humidity causes wood to expand.

Homes settle.

Minor sticking can happen.

If several doors suddenly stop closing properly at the same time...

That deserves a closer look.

✅ 10. "Why Is My Air Conditioner Running All Day?"

When it's 95° with Midwest humidity?

Because it's earning its paycheck.

Air conditioners often run much longer during extreme heat.

However, if it never reaches the thermostat setting or struggles even on moderate days, it may need maintenance or evaluation.

✅ 11. "Why Are There Tiny Cracks in My Drywall?"

Small drywall cracks often happen because homes naturally settle over time.

They're especially common near:

• doors

• windows

• corners

The drywall may be complaining.

The structure isn't necessarily.

✅ 12. "Should My Gutters Overflow During Heavy Rain?"

No.

They're designed to move water away from your home.

Overflowing gutters often point to:

• debris

• improper slope

• undersized gutters

• clogged downspouts

Your shower works.

Improve ventilation with an exhaust fan to help reduce excess moisture.

✅ 14. "Why Is My Sump Pump Running?"

If it's been raining?

That's exactly what it's supposed to do.

A sump pump that never runs during heavy rain is sometimes more concerning than one that does.

✅ 15. "Why Do My Floors Vibrate When People Walk?"

Some floor movement can be normal, particularly in older homes or homes with longer floor spans.

Excessive bounce, sagging, or movement should be evaluated further.

🚨 The 5 Things You Should NEVER Ignore

Now let's talk about the issues that deserve prompt attention.

🚨 1. Water Stains That Keep Growing

A water stain is like your house waving a white flag.

Water rarely fixes itself.

The stain you see is often much smaller than the damage you don't.

🚨 2. Burning Smells or Warm Electrical Outlets

Electricity should be boring.

Warm outlets.

Burning odors.

Sparking.

Frequently tripping breakers.

These deserve prompt evaluation by a qualified electrician.

🚨 3. Horizontal Foundation Cracks or Bowing Walls

Not every crack is serious.

These often are.

If a basement wall appears to be leaning or bowing inward, it should be professionally evaluated.

🚨 4. Active Roof Leaks

That tiny ceiling stain?

It's usually the beginning—not the end—of the story.

Water has often traveled before it finally appears indoors.

The sooner roof leaks are addressed, the better.

🚨 5. Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Alarms That Don't Work

This one isn't funny.

Working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms save lives.

Test them regularly.

Replace batteries as recommended.

Replace the alarms themselves when they've reached the end of their service life.
